Chapter Eleven
“Rex is going to St. Louis tomorrow, and I’m planning to go with him,” Clay announced at supper that night.
“Why?” Amy looked surprised.
“I want to check out this so-called grandfather of yours.”
“Then I’m going with you.”
“Oh dear. I don’t know about this,” Clara lamented. “It wouldn’t look right for the two of you to be going to a big city like that alone. Don’t you think you should be chaperoned?”
“Chaperoned.” Gary nodded at his wife’s word. “I think you have a good idea there. Eli can run things here and the two of us deserve a vacation. We could go along to keep the kids company and see the sights for ourselves. Maybe I might even look into buying us one of those automobiles Eli has been yammering about.”
Gary’s statement met with shocked silence around the table. “Are you saying we can modernize the farm?” Eli finally managed to say.
“I didn’t say anything about jumping into anything that radical. We’ll see how this automobile thing goes.”
“It’s not like riding a horse, Pa. How are you going to learn how to drive it?”
“If I’m not mistaken, Clay is more comfortable with an automobile than he is riding a horse. I’m certain he can teach me everything I need to know.”
“Of course I can, Uncle Gary. It’s a big investment, but Ma has had one for several years now. It made things easier for her than either riding a horse or driving a carriage. She enjoyed having her driver take her for long rides.”
“Why would that be easier than driving a carriage?” Eli questioned. “I would think she’d like the freedom of driving herself and not having to depend on someone else.”
Clay laughed at his cousin’s statement. “The older Ma got, the more crippled she became. She needed help doing everything. I think having my sister and me took a toll on her. She also had a groom who took care of our horses and drove her wherever she wanted to go in the carriage. Of course, getting into the automobile was easier for her than getting into and out of the carriages we owned.”
“You owned more than one carriage?” Clara said.
“Ma insisted on a closed carriage for winter and a surrey for summer. Pa also had his own sleigh for winter when riding his horse was impractical.”
“I know you said your family was well off, but I never considered them having such vast wealth,” Becky said.
“You have to remember most of the things we have were acquired over a long period of time. Added to that, Sally, my mother’s maid, is like a member of our family. Oh, Sally. I almost forgot to tell you. Ellie and Sally are planning to come here when I get back from St. Louis. I inquired while I was in town and learned there’s a house we can rent for the remainder of the summer.”
“I’ll hear nothing of that!” Clara exclaimed. “I won’t have family renting a house in town when there’s plenty of room here.
